Friday 8th January

 Good morning everyone at home! It's Friday! 

First of all a reminder: We're going to have a test Zoom meeting at 2.35pm today! Your parents have been emailed a zoom link so make sure you're online then. We'll have a bit of a catch up and I'll let you know what's going to happen on Zoom if you're learning from home next week. Looking forward to seeing you all!!! 

Here are your tasks for today: 

Reading 

Today I would like for you to do some independent reading for 20 minutes to half an hour. This is meant to be reading for pleasure so find yourself somewhere comfortable, get a snack and a hot drink and enjoy reading. (This is where you all have it better at home! We'll be doing similar in school but the classroom is cold brrrrr) 

English

Spelling Task 

Set a timer for 5 minutes. How many times can you write out the list of spellings in that time!

Today we are going to be thinking about adverbs, adverbial phrases, prepositions and prepositional phrases. 

Find out about adverbs and adverbial phrases here  

Remember adverbs and adverbial phrases give more information about the verb. It tells you how the action is taking place. 

Then look at this information about prepositions and prepositional phrases. Prepositions and prepositional phrases give more information about where the noun is or when the action is taking place. 

Your task 

Complete this task about adverbial and prepositional phrases. Write the sentences out and underline the adverb or adverbial phrase in one colour and the preposition or prepositional phrase in a different colour.

Reading 

Today I would like for you to write a book recommendation for the class. Think about the following questions: 

• What is the book about? (Don't give the story away!)
• Why do you like it? 
• What is your favourite part and why?
• Who would you recommend should read it?

I would like you to use the list of spellings from Tuesday. I would like you to use those words to create rainbow words like we do in our practice books. 

Lesson

Today we are continuing to think about flashbacks. In Harry Potter, J.K Rowling uses something called a pensieve to see memories that have happened in the past. Read this information about the pensieve. Then read this chapter from The Goblet of Fire where Dumbledore explains to Harry what it is and how it is used. 

Next, Watch this video of the scene from when Harry uses the pensieve for the first time in the Goblet of Fire. While watching, pay close attention to Dumbledore's office and the pensieve itself. 

Your task 

I would like you to write a descriptive paragraph about Harry entering Dumbledore's office and approaching the pensieve. Write up until the point he gets sucked into the memories inside. I want you to think about setting the scene - just like we did when writing Clockwork stories. This is a really mysterious scene as Harry doesn't know what the pensieve is or what it does.

Think about: 

• What Harry can see in Dumbledore's office 
• What the pensieve looks like?
• What can he see in the pensieve? 
• How is Harry feeling as he approaches the pensieve?

Make sure you send in your work so I can see your wonderful description. Don't forget to use a range of punctuation, expanded noun phrases and make powerful word choices for effect.

This term we are going to be thinking about inheritance, variation and evolution. 

To start us off, I would like you to look at this vocabulary sheet. Begin by writing what you know about the words in the list (it's okay if you don't know many because we're going to be learning about them!) 

Next, read through this powerpoint . Remember, it says that you don't need to remember the information about cells but it's useful to read it anyway. 

We are focusing on features that we inherit from our parents. Here is a picture of me and my brothers  and one of my parents . What features do you think I have inherited from my parents? Why do my brothers look different? Are there any features that we share? 

Now I would like for you to complete This worksheet which looks at two parents. What do you think their offspring might inherit from their parents? Draw pictures of what you think they might look like. Think about eye colour, skin colour, hair colour, cheek bones, eyebrows, lip shape, face shape etc

 Morning everyone! 

I hope you got on okay with yesterday's work. Sorry again for the mistakes I made in the maths video! 

Today you've got some reading, a spelling task, English, Fluent in 5, Maths, Art and PE. 

Reading 

Today you are going to continue your reading from yesterday (If you were in school yesterday, we didn't get a chance to read the first chapters. Catch up by looking at yesterday's blog post!)

English 

First complete this spelling activity. Re-write the sentences and add the missing words. If you're not sure of the meaning of one of the words, use a dictionary to look them up! 

We are going to continue looking at flashbacks in stories. Today we are going to read an extract from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. In this chapter, Harry gets attacked by the dementors. We find out that when the dementors attack, Harry has a flashback to when his parents were killed. He experiences this as if he were there and it happens in the present tense like he is actually experiencing it! 

Your task

Today, I would like for you to choose a memory from when you were younger. This could be funny, embarrassing or happy. Share this memory with someone at home. Then I would like you to write about this memory as if you are experiencing it right now. This means writing in the present tense. 

Here is an example written by someone in Class 6 a couple of years ago. 

Notice that this person has chosen a memory about a Christmas Eve. They have written in the present tense, has written it in chronological order and has used a variety of punctuation. This is what I expect from you too. I expect at least half a page for this memory - probably more if it was a good one!

Good morning everyone! 

Today we're going to begin some guided reading, we'll carry on with maths and English and do some Computing this afternoon. Here's what you have to do. 

Guided Reading 

Choose the text that you haven't yet read in your Guided Reading Group: 

Fear Machine - Read chapters 1 - 2. When you have finished, make a prediction about what you think will happen next? Why is Dani acting so suspiciously? Does she know something about the mysterious Miss Fortune? 

Time Trip - Read chapters 1 - 2. When you have finished I would like for you to write a short diary entry from Cat's point of view. Describe what happened at the volcano and how she felt waking up back at Nice. Also think about how she felt about the team going off through the X-gate without her.

 Geography 

This term we are going to be learning about rivers. 

We are going to begin by looking at the rivers of the UK. 

Begin by watching this video about rivers. It describes where rivers start and where they end. 

Where a river starts is called the river source. It is usually found in high places like hills or mountains. 

Rivers empty into bigger rivers, lakes or seas. Where this happens is called the river mouth.

Here is a  map of the major rivers of the UK.

I would like you to use your research skills. Use the internet to find out the source and the mouth of each of the rivers on this worksheet.

To begin this term we are going to be looking at stories with flashbacks. There are lots of different stories with flash backs in them. Here is an example from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone: 

Chapter 1

Read it first. 

The flashback here is used to explain action in another part of the story. In this example, it explains how Harry ended up with the Dursleys. Another example of that is Clockwork that we read last term. We had flashbacks to Prince Otto and Prince Florian to explain how Prince Florian ended up in the pub whistling his tune. 

Flashbacks are used for lots of different reasons in stories. They can be used to describe why character's act in certain ways.

This one from Finding Nemo, explains How Marlon becomes so nervous and worried about Nemo's safety. 

 This one from Toy Story 2 explains why Jessie doesn't want to be a child's toy anymore.

Your task today is to write a few sentences about why flashbacks are used in stories. 

Then I would like you to think of a film or book where there has been a flashback. Write a short paragraph to explain what the story is, what happens in the flashback and how the flashback adds more to the story. Does it add to the action? Does it explain something?
